Football Suffers First Loss Of The Season At Home To Maritime, 34-14

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2025) – The USMMA football team lost its home NEWMAC game to rival SUNY Maritime on Saturday, 34-14, on Homecoming Weekend at Brooks Stadium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 4-1 (2-1 NEWMAC), while the Privateers improve to 3-3 (1-2 NEWMAC) with the victory.

  • Offense: Sophomore Bubba Mustain (Oro Valley, Ariz.) went 4-for-9 for 89 yards and a touchdown; junior Caleb Callahan (Poulsbo, Wash.) hauled in a 19-yard TD; and sophomore Dane Grunder (Towson, Md.) added a 53-yard reception.
  • Defense: Junior Aidan Graham (Allen, Texas) led all tacklers with 10 including a sack, while senior Sam MacDonald (Phoenix, Ariz.) made eight stops.
  • Special teams: Freshman Karson Bye (Liberty Hill, Texas) went 2-for-2 on PATs; classmate Calvin Evans (Tualatin, Ore.) averaged 38.5 yards on two punts with a long of 44.
 
Key Plays
USMMA jumped in front 14-0 in the first quarter. A sustained opening march ended with a 6-yard score on the ground by junior Seamus Bonte (Westerville, Ohio), and on the next series Mustain hit Callahan from 19 yards for a two-touchdown cushion.
 
SUNY Maritime answered late in the half when grad. student Will Pickett found senior Nate Casaburi for touchdowns of 63 and 13 yards to tie it 14-14 at the break.
 
Turning Point
Pickett's 53-yard keeper midway through the third quarter gave the Privateers their first lead, 21-14, and swung momentum for good. On USMMA's next snap, a fumble set up a 13-play, 41-yard SUNY Maritime drive that ended in Pickett's 1-yard plunge for 28-14 late in the third.
 
USMMA lost two fumbles and was 1-for-3 on fourth down, stalling two promising second-half possessions. SUNY Maritime went 4-for-6 on fourth down and held the ball 40:47 to 19:13, limiting USMMA's chances.

  • Will Pickett: 12-of-18, 181 yards, 3 TD; 21 rushes, 162 yards, 2 TD.
  • Nate Casaburi: 6 catches, 129 yards, 2 TD.
  • The Privateers' defense produced three sacks and recovered two fumbles.
