KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 9, 2025) – In its first action of the New Year, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team defeated the visiting University of Scranton, 211-84, on Thursday at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool. The victory improved the Mariners' record to 5-0 overall, while the Royals fall to 2-5 in defeat.

Senior diver
Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) earned a score of 288.37 in the one-meter dive, which was his second NCAA Qualifying Mark of the season, meaning he has officially qualified for the NCAA Diving Regional Championship Meet later this season.

Graduate student
Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) led USMMA with three victories in the 50 freestyle (21.50), the 100 free (48.73) and the 100 butterfly (54.43).

Three other Mariners earned two wins apiece – junior
Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) in the 200 fly (1:54.95) and the 200 backstroke (1:52.69 – a season-best by two seconds), classmate
Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) in the three-meter dive (315.60 – over the NCAA cut) and the one-meter dive (309.67 – over the NCAA cut), and freshman
John Frank (Highland, Md.) in the 200 free (1:48.39) and the 200 breaststroke (2:13.01).

Other victories in individual events were achieved by the following:
- Freshman Cody Lay (Bartlesville, Okla.) in the 1000 free in 10:02.31
- Freshman Ryan McOsker (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 100 back in 54.13
- Senior Andrew Turbyfill (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 100 breast in 1:01.43
- Sophomore Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) in the 500 free in 4:51.97
- And junior Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.) in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.91
The Mariners' two relay teams touched first, though only the 400 medley relay in the beginning of the meet counted, as the team of Mayer, seniors
Dylan White (Burke, Va.) and
Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Frank won in 3:32.69. The 200 free relay team of McOsker, Scherrer, freshman
Max Fedorenko (Chicago, Ill.) and Mayer was exhibtioned but was the first to finish in 1:28.11.

In addition to Mayer's season-best in the 200 back, three other Mariners earned season-best times over four events listed below.
- Freshman Connor Wheeler (Humble, Texas) in the 50 free (24.81)
- Sophomore Peyton Harbin (Rockwall, Texas) in the 50 free (23.64) and the 100 fly (55.38)
- And freshman Brendan Baser (Cary, Ill.) in the 500 free (5:02.50)
The "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team, went to Mayer and sophomore diver
Charlie Williams (Vienna, Va.).
Merchant Marine is back in action next Wednesday, Jan. 15, when they play host to Skyline opponents Purchase and St. Joseph's-Long Island for a tri-meet beginning at 6 p.m. at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool.
