Men’s Swim & Dive Wins 2025 Skyline Conference Championship

PURCHASE, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team claimed the 2025 Skyline Conference Championship after the two-day meet ended on Sunday up at Purchase College. It was the Mariners' 26th-consecutive conference title (23rd under head coach Commander Sean M. Tedesco).
 
The men finished with 1,065 points, well ahead of second-place Mount St. Mary (224 points). St. Joseph's-Long Island rounded out the top three with 204 points.
 
Meet Links The Mariners swept every major award, as junior Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) earned the Skyline Swimmer of the Year Award, while classmate Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) was the Diver of the Year, freshman John Frank (Highland, Md.) was the Rookie of the Year and the coaching staff of Coach Tedesco and LT Johan C. Lopez, USMS garnered Coaching Staff of the Year honors for the fifth-straight season.
 
Cable and senior Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) combined for three NCAA Qualifying Scores in the diving competitions, as Cable won both the one-meter dive (436.80) and the three-meter dive (514.55), and Griffiths finished second in the three-meter event with a qualifying score of 507.20.
 
USMMA won all 19 events and officially finished in second place in all 15 individual events.
 
Finishing in first place and earning All-Skyline First Team honors were the following:
  • The 200 free relay team of grad. student Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.), Frank, freshman Ryan McOsker (Fredericksburg, Va.) and junior Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.) in 1:28.03
  • Sophomore Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) in the 500 freestyle (4:50.64) and the 1000 free (10:08.64)
  • Mayer in the 200 individual medley (1:56.89), the 100 backstroke (54.00), the 200 back (1:57.01) and the 200 butterfly (2:00.46)
  • Scherrer in the 50 free (22.00), the 100 fly (52.34) and the 100 free (48.86)
  • The 200 medley relay team of Mayer, sophomore Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.), senior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Scherrer in 1:36.25
  • The 400 medley relay team of Mayer, Dankert, DeCarlo and Scherrer in 3:33.79
  • Frank in the 400 IM (4:18.99)
  • Wachendorfer in the 200 free (1:47.34)
  • Dankert in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.03) and the 200 breast (2:17.67)
  • The 400 free relay team of sophomore Jason Equiano (Yonkers, N.Y.), Frank, Lester and Scherrer in 3:15.58
  • And Cable in the one-meter dive (436.80) and the three-meter dive (514.55) 
Finishing in second place and earning All-Skyline Second Team honors were the following:
  • Freshman Cody Lay (Bartlesville, Okla.) in the 500 free (4:59.27) and the 1000 free (10:08.79)
  • Frank in the 200 IM (1:57.27), the 100 breast (1:00.65) and the 200 breast (2:18.08)
  • McOsker in the 50 free (22.56) and the 100 back (54.17)
  • Lester in the 400 IM (4:24.22) and the 200 free (1:48.29)
  • DeCarlo in the 100 fly () and the 200 fly (2:04.43)
  • Junior Ryan Chmielenski (Bristow, Va.) in the 200 back (2:05.65)
  • Equiano in the 100 free (49.53)
  • And Griffiths in the one-meter dive (397.15) and the three-meter dive (507.20) 
The "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team, went to Equiano and sophomore diver Daniel Rush (Toms River, N.J.).
 
Up next for the Mariners is the USMMA Memorial Invite next Saturday, Feb. 1, where the squad will celebrate Senior Day. Action is set to get underway at 11 a.m. at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool.
