NEW LONDON, Conn. (Jan. 18, 2025) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team lost its rivalry matchup up at Coast Guard on Saturday, 171-129. The defeat ends the Mariners' dual-meet season at 7-1, while the Bears improve to 8-1 with the victory.

Two divers recorded a pair of NCAA qualifying marks each, as junior
Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) and senior
Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) both did so in the one- and three-meter boards. Cable also set two new pool records at CGA's Roland Pool, as he won both events on the afternoon, scoring a 333.07 in the one-meter dive and a 362.62 in the three-meter discipline. Griffiths, meanwhile, finished in second place in both the one-meter (298.05) and the three-meter (342.30) events.

Junior
Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) earned two victories in the 100 backstroke (52.31) and the 200 back (1:55.03) and grad student
Daniel Scherrer (Wellesley, Mass.) rounded out the Mariners' first-place finishes as he won the 50 freestyle (21.00).

A total of nine Mariners produced dual-meet season-best times on the afternoon. They are listed below.Â
- Scherrer in the 50 free, the 100 free (46.47) and the 100 butterfly (51.25)
- Senior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) in the 200 fly by eight seconds (1:54.85) and the 100 fly by three seconds (51.45)
- Freshman John Frank (Highland, Md.) in the 50 free (22.20) and the 200 breaststroke by two seconds (2:11.47)
- Junior Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.) in the 200 free by three seconds (1:44.04) and the 100 free (48.35)
- Sophomore Abraham Shim (Rockwall, Texas) in the 200 free by two seconds (1:47.69) and the 200 back, also by two seconds (1:55.90)
- Sophomore Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) in the 1000 free by two seconds (10:00.80) and the 500 free, also by two seconds (4:49.97)
- Freshman Ryan McOsker (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 100 back (53.39)
- Junior Ryan Chmielenski (Bristow, Va.) in the 100 back (55.44)
- Sophomore Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.) in the 100 breast (58.70)
The "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team, went to Wachendorfer for the swimmers and Cable for the divers.
