PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (April 20, 2024) – For the second consecutive game, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team pooled together a dominant offensive effort as the Mariners blew past St. Joseph's of Long Island to the tune of a 23-5 score on Saturday at Danzi Field in Patchogue.

Fourteen players registered a goal for USMMA (9-4, 5-1 Skyline) in the victory over the Golden Eagles, led by hat tricks from
Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) and
Kyle Hennelly (Dacula, Ga.). While those two players combined for six points in the win, sophomore
Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) led all scorers individual with two goals and two assists to account for a four-point afternoon. Four other Mariners scored a pair of goals, including
Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Charlie Wahlin (Stafford, Va.) with each adding an assist to their points for the game. Wahlin also accounted for four ground balls in the victory. First-years
Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) and
Brendan Ring (Philadelphia, Pa.) were the other players with two goals for USMMA.
Six other Mariners collected a goal in the game including face-off specialists
Adam Johnson (Canton, Ohio) and
Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.), who combined to win 10-of-18 face-offs on the game with each player going 5-for-9 in the circle. Other goal scorers in the game included juniors
Jack Meyer (Sandy, Utah) and
Andrew Stephenson (Boca Raton, Fla.), sophomore
Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) and first-years
Axel Flotten (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Luke Holava (Virginia Beach, Va.).
Both
Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) and
Owen Markel (The Woodlands, Texas) collected a pair of assists for Merchant Marine with four other players being credited with an assist including face-off specialist
Jason Rupli (Washington, D.C.) who also went 7-for-14 in a dominant performance for the Mariners in the face-off circle.
Jackson Lynch (Charleston, S.C.),
Damien Martin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and
Ryan Thorne (Selden, N.Y.) were the other Mariners to collect a point in the victory. Hofstetter led the defensive unit with two caused turnovers, a team lead he shared with
Mark Bredeck (Severna Park, Md.) and
Caston Mestayer (Ocean Springs, Miss.). All four goalies played a quarter in the game with
Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) stopping three shots and earning the victory. Senior
Coby Schwartz (Pittsburgh, Pa.), sophomore
Tucker Swinerton (Weston, Fla.) and rookie
Joseph Montazella (Lyme, Conn.) each made two saves in cage over their one period of play.
Michael Carere had two goals and an assist for St. Joseph's (1-9, 1-4 Skyline) in the loss while also going 14-for-23 in the face-off circle and picking up 11 ground balls. Nik Allen added two goals and Connor Owenburg had a goal and an assist for the Golden Eagles. Connor Van Dusen played three quarters in cage for the hosts and made eight saves.
USMMA started the game on a 7-0 run with Behr and Collins each scoring a pair of goals in the first five minutes of play. Following Carere's goal that broke up the shutout with nine-and-a-half minutes to play, the Mariners scored five more in the first quarter while going on a nine-goal run to lead 16-1 with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half. KP scored four more times in the third quarter in shutting out the Golden Eagles, with Ring collecting his pair of markers in the fourth frame along with Meyer's goal off a feed from Wahlin.
USMMA returns home for the final contest of the regular season on Saturday, April 27 against Farmingdale State at Brooks Stadium. The opening face-off is set for 12 p.m. and the Mariners will host a pregame celebration of Senior Day, honoring their departing upperclassmen. sLive stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
