GEORGETOWN, Texas (March 15, 2024) – Sophomore
Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) scored three of the first four goals of the game and finished the day with a team-best seven points (5G, 1A) as he helped lead the USMMA men's lacrosse team to a 19-14 road win at Southwestern University in the first game of the Mariners' Spring Break trip on Friday afternoon. The victory improved Merchant Marine's record to 2-2, while the Pirates fell to 1-7 in defeat.

A total of 11 Mainers found the scoresheet in the game, including six with multi-point efforts. Aside from Barcus' six points, two players had five each, sophomore
William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) with three goals and two assists and junior
Jack Collins (Memphis, Tenn.) with two goals and three helpers.
Sophomore
Jack DeTommaso (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded four points after finding the back of the net twice and dishing out two assists, freshman
Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) scored twice and had one assist and senior
Erich Diehl (Long Valley, N.J.) produced two tallies.
Juniors
Aidan Coleman (Killingworth, Conn.) and
Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) both scored their first goals of the year, while freshman
Owen Markel (The Woodlands, Texas) collected his third goal of the season. Rounding out the Mariners' scorers were senior
Sam Winkler (Moorestown, N.J.) and junior
Chris Neuman (South Huntington, N.Y.), who both recorded one assist apiece.
Defensively, sophomore
Michael Valentine IV (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) caused a game-high four turnovers. Freshman goalie
Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) earned his first collegiate victory between the pipes after making six saves and tying for the game-high with five ground balls. Three other Mariners had four ground balls each, Neuman, who won nine faceoffs, DeTommaso and sophomore
Damien Martin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.).
For Southwestern, junior Cade McDonald led all players on the day with seven points on five goals and two assists. Five other Pirates had multi-point games, including junior Alex Hudgins with three (2G, 1A). Junior Bennett Maddox caused two turnovers and classmate William Howell Jr. tied Garcia for the game-high with five ground balls. Freshman Trey Pena won 19 faceoffs and two goalies combined to make eight saves for the home team.
