Men’s Swim & Dive Victorious Over Stevens In First Home Meet Of Season

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 7, 2024) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team held its first home dual meet of the season against non-conference opponent Stevens at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool. The Mariners came out on top of the Ducks by the final of 169-65 to improve to 4-0 on the season, with Stevens falling to 2-3 in defeat.
 
Meet Links A pair of divers notched NCAA qualifying scores on the day, as junior Thomas Cable (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) did so in both the one-meter and three-meter events with event-winning scores of 312.50 and 304.20, respectively, and senior Brendan Griffiths (Easton, Pa.) hit his qualifying score in the one-meter after placing second with a score of 288.30. For Cable, it was his second cut in the one-meter board, so he has officially qualified for the NCAA Diving Regional Championships later this season.
 
USMMA won all 13 events on the day, with a total of six Mariners claiming victory in multiple events.
 
Junior Teague Mayer (Boulder, Colo.) and freshman John Frank (Highland, Md.) both won a team-best three events. They were both members of the 200 medley relay team that led off the meet with a win in 1:36.21. Mayer then went on to win the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.01 and the 100 backstroke in a season-best time of 52.30. Frank touched first in the two sprint-freestyle events, the 50 free (22.60) and the 100 free (49.43).
 
Cable, senior Joseph DeCarlo (Powder Springs, Ga.) and junior Matthew Wachendorfer (Greensboro, N.C.) all were victorious in two events. Cable won the one- and three-meter dives, while DeCarlo and Wachendorfer were both members of the 200 free relay that won in 1:29.83. DeCarlo also touched first in the 100 butterfly in 52.70 and Wachendorfer won the 200 free with a time of 1:47.60.
 
Listed below are the remainder of the winners for the Mariners.
  • Sophomore Luke Dankert (Grand Island, Neb.) and freshman Ryan McOsker (Fredericksburg, Va.) were on the 200 medley relay team with Mayer and Frank that won early.
  • Freshman Cody Lay (Bartlesville, Okla.) earned the win in the 1000 free in 10:04.64
  • Sophomore Ryan Lester (Heath, Texas) touched first in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.70
  • Sophomore Caden Latchaw (Queenstown, Md.) won the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 57.84
  • Sophomore Jason Equiano (Yonkers, N.Y.) and freshman Max Fedorenko (Chicago, Ill.) were members of the 200 free relay team with DeCarlo and Wachendorfer that closed out the meet with a win.
Additionally of note, freshman distance swimmer Brendan Baser (Cary, Ill.) shaved off nine seconds in the 1000 free for a new season-best time of 10:17.62.
 
Latchaw earned "Mariner of the Meet" honors, awarded based on a team vote to an individual for their performance and contribution to the team. Griffiths earned the same recognition among the divers.
 
The Mariners now have a break from competition for the remainder of the calendar year and will pick back up in 2025 with a home meet on Thursday, Jan. 9, against former Landmark Conference foe the University of Scranton. Action against the Royals is set to get underway at 6 p.m. at the Sue Petersen Lubow Pool.
