KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 17, 2024) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost its home opener to No. 1 nationally ranked and defending National Champion New York University, 96-65, on Sunday afternoon at Liebertz Gymnasium. The Violets improved to 4-0, while the Mariners dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Emily Grasseler (Millbrook, N.Y.) posted her second straight double-double with a game and career-high 28 points while hauling down 12 rebounds, also a game-best. Freshman
Carolae Barton (Waldorf, Md.) chipped in with 13 points, while senior
Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.) handed out a game-high five assists.
Junior
Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas) and Barton snagged a team-high two steals each. Barton also turned away a game-best two shots in the contest.
The Violets had three players score in double figures, with sophomore Brooke Batchelor leading the way with a team and career-high 17 points. Senior Belle Pellecchia and freshman Paika Van Der Maas both contributed 16 points apiece. Junior Carolina Peper dished out a team-high four assists. Sophomore Eden Williamson and Van Der Maas gobbled up a game-best three steals each.
