KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2023) – Despite being outshot by an 18-7 margin, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Skyline foe Manhattanville. USMMA moved to 1-4-5 (1-0-3 Skyline) with the tie, while Manhattanville saw its record go to 2-3-4 (2-0-2 Skyline).
Prior to the game, the USMMA soccer program paid tribute to its two graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring
Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) and
Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.).
Carey made three saves for the Mariners to earn his first shutout of the season. Luis Granados stopped two shots to collect the clean sheet for the Valiants.
Game Link
A corner kick helped Manhattanville create the game's first scoring opportunity in the 3rd minute, but a close-range header sailed wide left.
The Mariners were also off-target on their first attempt as junior
Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) pushed a shot wide in the 6th minute. Neither team managed a shot on goal until the 20th minute when freshman
Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) had a shot saved by Granados. Jung had another opportunity less than one minute later, but sent the effort wide.
USMMA kept the pressure on the Valiants, but Granados was up to the task and stopped a shot from junior
Jason Healey (King George, Va.) in the 31st minute.
The Mariners were fortunate to keep the game scoreless in the 38th minute. On the second of back-to-back Manhattanville corner kicks, a shot from Trevor Henderson connected with the crossbar.
Carey faced only one shot in the first half, saving an attempt in the 45th minute that kept the game scoreless at the half.
The Manhattanville offense went to work quickly after the break. Carey saved a header in the 48th minute before the unlucky Valiants found the crossbar once again in the 52nd minute. The Valiants added two more off-target attempts before Carey added another save in the 61st minute.
The USMMA offense, meanwhile, was held without a second-half shot until the 75th minute when senior
Miguel Millan (Lake Travis, Texas) pushed a header wide. Jung had a shot blocked less than 30 seconds later, but the Mariners could not take advantage of the ensuing corner kick.
Manhattanville was unlucky yet again in the 82nd minute as the Valiants found the woodwork for the third time with a shot off the post.
USMMA had one final chance to get on the board in the 85th minute, but Millan missed wide and the game ended scoreless.
USMMA returns to action on Oct. 3, hosting Skyline opponent Sarah Lawrence for a 7 p.m. contest at Bartoszek Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available with links on
