Mariners Play To 1-1 Draw With Farmingdale At Home

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2023) – The USMMA men's soccer team recorded its third-straight tie on Tuesday night, battling visiting Skyline Conference foe Farmingdale State to a 1-1 draw at Bartoszek Field in a rematch of the 2022 Skyline Semifinals. The stalemate moves the Mariners to 0-4-4 (0-0-2 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams record goes to 2-2-2 (0-0-1 Skyline).

Game Link The Rams had a number of the early chances in the game, firing off two shots on goal in the opening 17 minutes. They were both turned aside by senior keeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.). Farmingdale converted on their third attempt, scoring in the 19th minute off a pretty header goal by Anthony Bileddo from the center of the box off of a nice centering pass by Luke Kasulke from the near corner.

The Mariners responded just under 17 minutes later, in the 36th minute when junior Mark Sommer (St. Louis, Mo.), who had just been subbed into the game, fired in a corner that sophomore Billy Castoro (Garden City, N.Y.) was able to bury off the post and into the net. It was Castoro's first tally of the year.

Both teams put one more shot each towards the net in the first half, but not on goal, and the two sides went into the break tied 1-1.

The second half was much more wide open, with Merchant Marine firing off the first five shots and FSC producing the next five – one of which was saved by Carey and another in the 70th minute that hit the post.

On the night, the two squads tied 10-10 in shots, with the Rams having a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Carey finished the night with three saves and his counterpart for Farmingdale, Justin Silva, had no saves as the Mariners' lone shot on goal wound up in the net.

Up next, the Mariners travel up to the Bronx on Saturday night, Sept. 23, to take on the College of Mount St. Vincent. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dolphins' Athletic Field at Marillac. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
