PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (May 12, 2023) – A three-run first-inning deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the fifth-seeded USMMA baseball team was defeated by top-seeded St. Joseph's-Long Island, 4-2. USMMA saw its record go to 25-15 on the season, while St. Joseph's-Long Island improved to 28-9.
Sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) was 1-for-4 with an RBI to help pace USMMA, while junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 1-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 0-for-4 with an RBI and junior
Brice Garner (Fort Collins, Colo.) was 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Junior
Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) took the loss (3-3) after surrendering four runs in 7.0 innings of work.
After a quick 1-2-3 top of the first, St. Joseph's-Long Island loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame and took a 3-0 lead on a two-out walk and a two-run double.
The Mariners then broke into the scoring column in the third after Garner started things with a leadoff walk. Garner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch before Millen made it 3-1 with an RBI groundout.
The USMMA offense went right back to work in the fourth, stringing together three-straight singles to add another run and pull to within 3-2. Reistetter and senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) led off with back-to-back singles before Clapsaddle added an RBI single, but the Golden Eagles rolled a 4-6-3 double play to help limit the damage.
A leadoff walk and two stolen bases set up an RBI groundout in the fifth as St. Joseph's-Long Island extended its lead to 4-2.
The Mariners did not allow another run after the fifth, but were kept at bay offensively with just one walk and one single in the final four frames.
USMMA will now take on either No. 2 seed Maritime or No. 6 seed Purchase later today at approximately 5 p.m. in an elimination game. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
