KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 23, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team swept Maritime in a Skyline doubleheader, scoring nine unanswered runs in a 9-3 game one triumph before scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth of a 5-4 victory in game two. USMMA improved to 18-11 (7-5 Skyline), while Maritime dropped to 20-12 (7-5 Skyline).
Â
Freshman
Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) hit safely in both games to extend his hitting streak to 23.
Game 1
USMMA trailed by three runs before a five-run third and a four-run fourth helped propel the Mariners to a 9-3 victory. Junior
Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored to help lead USMMA offensively. Reistetter (4-2) also earned the win after allowing three runs, one earned, and striking out eight in a complete game effort. Sophomore
Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while senior
Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Â
Maritime took advantage of an error as part of a three-run third inning that included a pair of sacrifice flies.
Â
USMMA, however, promptly sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the home half of the third. The Mariners loaded the bases with no outs before Millen reached on an RBI fielder's choice as the Privateers unsuccessfully tried to erase the lead runner at the plate. Reistetter then helped his own cause with a two-run single that tied the game. Chambers added a sacrifice fly before Darling made it a 5-3 ballgame with an RBI single.
Â
The Mariners kept the pressure on by scoring four more runs in the fourth. After a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt, senior
Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) opened a stretch of four-consecutive hits with an RBI triple. Millen followed with an RBI single before Reistetter tacked on an RBI triple of his own. A Chambers RBI single gave USMMA the final 9-3 margin.
Â
Game 2
After surrendering the game-tying run in the top of the eighth, the Mariners retook the lead in the bottom of the frame and secured the sweep with a 5-4 victory. Sophomore
Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) came through with the go-ahead RBI single and finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Chambers went 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Reistetter was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Freshman
Quin Fitzgerald (Jupiter, Fla.) earned his first-career win after allowing one unearned run in 3.0 innings.
Â
The Privateers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but USMMA was quick to respond with a run in the bottom of the frame. After Clapsaddle started things with a leadoff triple, sophomore
Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) made it 2-1 with a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Mariners then took the lead with three runs in the third as a Chambers two-run double and a Clapsaddle sacrifice fly gave USMMA a 4-2 lead.
Â
Maritime closed to within 4-3 after a two-out RBI single in the fourth and the score stayed that way until the top of the eighth when an error set the stage for a two-out RBI single that tied the game at 4-4.
Â
USMMA answered right back after Reistetter set the table with a leadoff double in the bottom of the eighth. A groundout pushed Reistetter to third before Clapsaddle grounded an RBI single through the left side of a drawn-in infield to put the Mariners back on top, 5-4.
Â
USMMA returns to action on April 26, hosting St. Elizabeth in a 6 p.m. non-conference contest. Live stats and live video will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
