Mariners Down Coast Guard, 12-2, For Fourth-Straight Victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 28, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team scored at least 10 runs for the fourth time in as many games and also extended its winning streak to four with a 12-2 triumph against Coast Guard. USMMA improved to 10-5 with the victory, while Coast Guard moved to 5-8.

Game Links Senior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) finished 2-for-5 with a solo home run and three RBI to lead USMMA, while classmate Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) was 2-for-6 with two RBI and sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) added an RBI as part of a 3-for-4 effort. Sophomore Jacob Syversen (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) started and allowed just one run in 6.0 innings of work for the victory. The righty (3-1) had six strikeouts and retired the final nine batters he faced.

USMMA plated a run in the first, but Coast Guard answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. The Mariners, however, responded in the second with the first of back-to-back three-run innings. After USMMA loaded the bases with one out, Zanetti ripped a two-run double to right before sophomore Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) made it a 4-1 ballgame with a sacrifice fly.

A Chambers home run led off the third as three more runs gave the Mariners a 7-1 advantage. Freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) added an RBI single in the frame, while sophomore Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) had a sacrifice fly.

The Mariners tacked on two more runs in the sixth before consecutive bases-loaded walks aided a three-run eighth that made it 12-1.

Freshman Ryan Felton (Granbury, Texas) and classmate Caden Pierce (Marietta, Ga.) each tossed 1.0 scoreless inning of relief for the Mariners.

The USMMA baseball team resumes Skyline Conference action on April 1 with a noon doubleheader on the road against Old Westbury. The games will be played at Farmingdale State. Live stats and a live video feed of the games will be available on USMMASports.com with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
