Zanetti Records Milestone Hit; Mariners Defeated By Ripon, 3-2

MILLINGTON, Tenn. (March 15, 2023) – The USMMA baseball team lost to Ripon, 3-2, in a game that saw senior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) finish 1-for-4 to become the 15th member of the USMMA 100-hit club.
 
Freshman Parker Hutchins (Lucas, Texas) went 1-for-2 with a two-run double to lead USMMA (4-4), while sophomore Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) and senior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) each finished 2-for-4. Junior Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) started and took a no-decision after allowing two runs, zero earned, in 6.0 innings of work. Ripon (3-5) retired 14 of the final 15 batters in the game and did not allow a run after the second inning.
 
Game Links Ripon took the early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first, but the USMMA offense answered with a two-run second. After sophomore Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) set the table with a leadoff double, freshman Ernest Darling (Highland, Ill.) singled and Hutchins made it a 2-1 ballgame with a two-run double.
 
Reistetter retired eight-straight batters following a leadoff single in the third, but a two-out error in the fifth led to another unearned run as Ripon leveled the score at 2-2.
 
Ripon went down in order in both the sixth and seventh frames, but was able to take advantage of a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt to push across the go-ahead run in the eighth.
 
USMMA did put the tying run on in the bottom of the ninth as sophomore Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) led off with a single. A successful sacrifice bunt moved the tying run into scoring position, but Ripon retired the next two batters to end the ballgame.
 
The USMMA baseball team returns to action with a pair of games on March 17 at the USA Stadium Complex in Millington, Tenn. Following a rematch against Ripon at Noon, USMMA will retake the field for a 6 p.m. contest against Alfred State.
