Mariners Tie With CMSV On The Road, 1-1

BRONX, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2023) – On Thursday night, in a make-up of the previously rained-out Skyline Conference matchup against Mount St. Vincent, the USMMA men's soccer team battled the host Dolphins to a 1-1 draw. The tie is the Mariners' sixth of the season, which already ties their mark from the 2022 season, as they move to 2-4-6 (2-0-4 Skyline) on the year, while CMSV moves to 3-4-2 (1-2-2 Skyline).
 
Game Link The physical battle was apparent early on, but it would be CMSV who struck first. In just the fifth minute of action, Sebastian Mesa crashed the net and converted a pass from Alinoti Jacques to make it 1-0 in favor of the Dolphins.
 
A hand ball call in the box on Mount St. Vincent put the Mariners on the line for a penalty attempt in the 20th minute. The shot by sophomore Drew Boukidis (Charlotte, N.C.) reached the back of the net, leading to a score that would eventually be the final.
 
It was a hard fought, back-and-forth contest between two teams that matched up in the conference quarterfinal in 2022. The Mariners held a 10-2 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Senior keeper Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) made one save on the night, while his counterpart for the Dolphins, Joel Luna ended his night with three saves.
 
Merchant Marine is back at it this Sunday, Oct. 8, when they step out of Skyline Conference action for the last time this season hosting the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University. The Mainers will be celebrating Great Neck PAL Day throughout the contest. Kickoff is slated for 12-noon on Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium in Kings Point.
