Mariners Sink Dolphins, 69-55; Hunter Honored Pregame For 1,000th Career Point

BRONX, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2023) – USMMA senior Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.) was honored on the road on Saturday before the Mariners' Skyline game at Mount St. Vincent for her 1,000th career point, which she scored earlier this month, before Merchant Marine defeated the Dolphins, 69-55, at CMSV's Sharp Center Gym. The victory improved the Mariners' record to 15-2 (10-2 Skyline) on the season, while the Dolphins fall to 7-10 (3-9 Skyline) in defeat.

The USMMA coaching staff originally planned to surprise Hunter with a celebratory ball for 1,000 career points prior to its first home game in six weeks this coming Wednesday, but with her parents in town from Chicago this weekend, the Mariners requested (and Mount St. Vincent obliged) to honor Hunter before this afternoon's game started up in the Bronx. She becomes just the seventh player in KP program history to reach the milestone.

Hunter went on to lead Merchant Marine with 20 points as part of yet another double-double effort with a game-high 10 rebounds. Two other Mariners contributed 15 points apiece – sophomores Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho) and Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) – while also both tying for the game-high with five assists each.

The Mariners more than doubled-up the Dolphins on the glass with 47 rebounds to CMSV's 23. That went hand-in-hand with a 22-3 advantage in second-chance points thanks to 21 offensive boards by USMMA.

For Mount St. Vincent, senior Kira Villegas drained 25 points to lead all players, while also recording a game-high five steals. Junior Melanieann Broderick brought down a team-best nine rebounds.

The Mariners finally return home this coming Wednesday, Jan. 25, with a Skyline contest against Farmingdale State that will begin at 5 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links posted on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
