In a game where every inch of the pitch was contested, who else but freshman
Morgan Mitchell (Amory, Miss.) opened the scoring with 24:34 remaining in the first half. Goal number 16 was a beauty for Mitchell, who forced and takeaway and ripped it upstairs over freshman keeper Javiera Sanchez to put the Mariners on top.
Down 1-0, the Dolphins upped their pressure throughout the rest of the game. Pressure that sophomore goalkeeper
Margret Ripperger (McKinney, Texas) handled as best as she could. Despite the loss, Ripperger made a season-high 12 saves, several of which were high-quality scoring chances.
Mount St. Vincent outshot the Mariners, 11-5, in the first half and kept the heat on in the final 45 minutes. The Dolphins kept firing on net and senior Emily McCarthy cracked the code of Ripperger to knot the score 1-1 at the 55:06 mark with a shot that curled inside the far post.
As the game continued into the latter stages, the Dolphins kept pressing in search of the win on the road. Freshman Victoria Gamarra raced down the middle of the field and fired the go-ahead goal off of the inside of the near post to put the Dolphins in front to stay with 10:35 on the clock.
The CMSV defense closed out the victory, as the Dolphins stole a huge one on the road.
The Mariners now look ahead to a key road conference match, as they will head to Farmingdale State to take on reigning Skyline Champion Rams this Saturday, Sept. 24, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
