NEW LONDON, Conn. (Sept. 13, 2022) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost its rivalry matchup to Coast Guard, 3-1, on Tuesday night at the USCGA's Roland Hall Gym. The Mariners (3-2) won the first set, 25-21, but the Bears (8-1) took the next three, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.

Senior
Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) had another double-double with a team-best 14 kills to go along with 13 digs. Classmate
Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) dished out 29 assist and served up four aces to tie for the match-high in both categories, while freshman
Stephanie Schatzman (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all players on the night with 14 digs. Junior
Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) contributed defensively with 13 digs, and classmate
Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) added nine kills to the attack.

After firing at a .286 percentage as a team in the first set, Merchant Marine wound up finishing the night hitting just .045, while also holding Coast Guard to only a .156 hitting percentage. The Bears had a big advantage in service aces (11-7) and blocks (11-4), however, which proved to swing momentum in their favor.

Coast Guard sophomore Shannon Shaw had a match-high 17 kills and also led the Bears with 12 digs, while senior Noelle Tursky recorded 29 assists and put down a match-best six blocks. Junior Carmen Zipf tied Hyun for the most service aces on the night with four.
