Women’s Lacrosse Run Ends In NCAA Second Round

WATERVILLE, Maine (May 15, 2022) – The 2022 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse season came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a loss to #8 Colby College in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Mules' Alfond Field. The Mariners close out the season with a 14-3 overall record, while the Mules improve to 15-3 and move on to the Round of 16. 
Game Link All of USMMA's scoring came in the fourth quarter, as senior Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) tallied goals number 92 and 93 of the season back-to-back to start the frame. That was followed by junior Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Lauren Jablonowski (Levittown, N.Y.) finding the back of the net, which made the score 19-4 on favor of the hosts with just over four minutes to play. Colby added one more to close out the scoring on the day.
 
Sophomore Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) had an assist on Sheedy's goal. Sheedy secured a team-best five draw controls, junior Jenna Turrentine (Kennesaw, Ga.) tied the game-high with six groundballs and senior Helen Davis (Dagsboro, Del.) also matched the game-high in caused turnovers with three while also picking up five GBs. Junior goalie Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) finished the day with two saves.
 
For the Mules, junior Gianna Bruno led all players in the game with eight points on three goals and five assists. Junior Annie Eddy added five points (four goals and one helper), senior Hallie Schwartzman recorded a game-high six draw controls and tied Turrentine with six groundballs. Senior Sarah Stark caused three turnovers and classmate Emily Podgorni made three saves to earn the victory in the net. In the second half, sophomore Sarah Hearns also made three stops.
