Mariners Split Sunday Doubleheader With Mount St. Mary

KINGS POING, N.Y. (April 24, 2022) – The Mariners walked off with a 3-2 win in the opener before falling in game two of Sunday's home double header against conference rival Mount St. Mary. Junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) drove in the game winner in game one, which also secured the complete game victory for freshman Jacob Syversen (Land O'Lakes, Fla). The Knights earned the split on the day, coming out on top of a 6-1 decision in game two.

Game Links Mount St. Mary (12-16, 7-9 Skyline) struck first in game one with their leadoff Anthony Franco, who took a 1-2 offering over the left field fence in the first inning. But that would be the only earned run allowed by Syversen on the day as he went the rest of the way, striking out five, to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Merchant Marine (20-15, 11-5 Skyline) pulled even in the fifth on a Chambers single, while freshman Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) added a fielder's choice RBI to give the Mariners their first lead at 2-1. The Knights took advantage of a Mariners error to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

USMMA would not let the game see extras as three-straight hits to start the bottom of the seventh from Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas), Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.), and Chambers sealed the 3-2 win.

The Mariners were only able to scratch out a single run in the second game, which came on a Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) base hit following a pair of errors from Mount St. Mary. USMMA had some opportunities, leaving 11 runners on base and hitting into two double plays.

USMMA is back in action Wednesday night, April 27, for a 5 p.m. first pitch at home in a non-conference clash against CCNY. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
