NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 5, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team lost on the road Saturday afternoon up at Connecticut College, 18-7, at the Camels' Silfen Field. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 1-1 on the young season, while the Conn College begins its year 1-0.

Jessie Wohner (Norfolk, Va.) led USMMA with four points on a goal and three assists, while sophomore
Kaitlyn Latchaw (Phoenix, Md.) and freshman
Morgan Tracy (Cambridge, Md.) both added two points – Latchaw on two tallies and Tracy on a goal and one helper.
Three other Mariners found the back of the net – juniors
Jaqui Sheedy (Baltimore, Md.) and
Julia Coughlin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and freshman
Gianna Russo (Wake Forest, N.C.) for the first time in her career. Senior
Maddie Schmidt (Mechanicsville, Va.) secured a team-high seven draw controls and junior goalie
Hope Germanakos (Lynbrook, N.Y.) made five saves on the afternoon.
After the two teams traded the first two goals of the afternoon, the Camels strung together three-straight to take a 4-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Wohner cut the deficit to two with a late tally in the opening frame that made it 4-2.
Connecticut College distanced themselves in the second, however, scoring eight times while holding the Mariners to just two goals once again, as the hosts went into the locker rooms with a 12-4 halftime lead that they never relinquished.
For the Camels, senior Kelly Wolin led all players in the game with six points on four goals and two assists, while freshman Greta Panke contributed five points (2G, 3A) and three other Camels had four points apiece. Freshman Aine Downey led all players with eight draw controls and sophomore goalie Violette Nidds made 10 saves to earn the victory between the pipes.
The Mariners are back in action next Saturday, March 12, when they welcome Ramapo College of the New Jersey Athletic Conference to Tomb Field. Opening draw is scheduled for 12-noon. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available on USMMASports.com with links on
