Mariners Can’t Get By #1 Cortland, Drop 10-1 Home Affair On Friday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 2, 2022) – The USMMA baseball team lost to the #1 team in the nation, SUNY Cortland, 10-1, on Friday afternoon at Bartoszek Field. The Mariners fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Red Dragons improve to 6-1 with the victory.

Freshman starter Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) surrendered six runs in six-plus innings of work. Only four of the six runs against Syversen were earned, as the Mariners' defense struggled committing five errors in the loss.

Merchant Marine issued a total of 13 walks on the afternoon. Sophomore Blake Jennings (Snellville, Ga.) provided a bright spot in relief, by pitching the last three innings and saving arms in the bullpen.
 
On the offensive side, the Mariners mustered five singles on the afternoon, as the offense could not get in the same groove as they did against Wells last weekend. Freshman Garrett Clapsaddle (Murphy, N.C.) knocked in the only run for the Mariners on an RBI groundout that plated classmate Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) in the fourth that made the score 3-1 at the time.
 
The Mariners are right back it tomorrow at 12-noon with a doubleheader against Skidmore College. In a double-dip that will contain both a seven-inning and a nine-inning game, the Mariners will look to get back in the win column. Sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) will get the ball for the seven-inning game in Game 1 while classmate Kole Register (Virginia Beach, Va.) will toe the slab in the nine-inning game in Game 2.
