Mariners Conclude Spring Break Trip With Extra-Inning Loss To Wisconsin-Stout

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 19, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team let a late lead slip away and lost to Wisconsin-Stout, 11-9, in 10 innings on Saturday to conclude the Mariners' trip to the Gene Cusic Classic down in Florida. The defeat drops USMMA's record to 3-9, while the Blue Devils improve to an even 5-5.

  • The Mariners trailed most of the game, but went ahead 8-6 after scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • UW-Stout plated three to reclaim the lead in the next half-inning, but Merchant Marine tied it up on a suicide squeeze in the bottom half of the eighth.
  • The Blue Devils took an 11-9 lead in the 10th, however, and the Mariners had no answer with their last licks despite getting two runners on.
  • Junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) led the way at the plate for the Mariners, going 4-for-5 with a double and a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas) knocked in two and scored once after his 2-for-4 day with a double.
  • Freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) went 3-for-5 with two runs and also had a double on the day.
  • Senior Brayden O'Connell (Beaver Dams, N.Y.) went yard in the fifth for his first-career home run.
  • On the mound, sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) got the starting nod and struck out 10 Blue Devil batters in six innings.
  • The Mariners got scoreless innings of relief from freshman Jacob Syversen (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) in the seventh and Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) in the ninth, and senior Billy Todd (Gastonia, N.C.) set aside his two batters faced in the 10th. All three had one strikeout apiece.
  • For Wisconsin-Stout, Jack Schirpke went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and three runs scored. He had a three-run homer in the second and a pair of doubles. Charlie Szykowny earned the win after pitching the final 2.1 innings and striking out four, including the final batter of the game.
