Mariners Drop St. Patrick’s Day Showdown With Wisconsin Lutheran Down In Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 17, 2022) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost to Wisconsin Lutheran College, 14-10, earlier on Thursday at Terry Park Field #2. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 3-7 on the season, while the Warriors improve to 2-6 with the victory.

Game Link Game Highlights
  • After going ahead 3-0 on a pair of unearned runs in the third (including a sacrifice fly by junior Jared Chambers (Houston, Texas)) and then an RBI-single by sophomore Tyler Reistetter (Dickinson, Texas) in the fifth, the Mariners surrendered seven runs in the top of the sixth.
  • The two teams wound up combining for 12 runs in the sixth inning, as USMMA stormed back to take an 8-7 lead by plating five in the bottom half. The first two runs came on a passed ball with the bases loaded and then a wild pitch, before junior Joey Zanetti (Richmond, Va.) ripped a two-run triple to left field and then scored on a balk.
  • WLC tied it back up at 8-8 in the top of the seventh, but senior Noah Herdman (Naperville, Ill.) put the Mariners back ahead with a home run in the bottom half.
  • The Warriors got that run back with a homer in the eighth, but once again Merchant Marine used the long ball to take the lead back, this time it was freshman Travis Leatherwood (Catonsville, Md.) with his first-career dinger to make it 10-9.
  • The lead was short-lived, however, as Wisconsin Lutheran exploded for five runs in the top of the ninth.
  • The Mariners got a runner on base and into scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, as freshman Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) picked up his team-best third hit of the game and made it to second on an passed ball, but he was left stranded after a game-ending strikeout.
  • Vanasse finished 3-for-5 with a run scored.
  • Zanetti was 1-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Leatherwood and freshman Jack Millen (Shelby, N.C.) also scored two teams each on the day.
  • On the mound, junior Chris Klayer (Brownsburg, Ind.) got the start and hurled five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with two strikeouts.
  • Senior Grant Corb (Katy, Texas) suffered the loss after tossing the final two innings.
  • For the Warriors, sophomore Foster Engelhardt led the way going 3-for-5 from the dish with three RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Tyler Danko also knocked in three and scored twice. Junior Glavine Matthes earned the win after finishing the final 2.2 innings, giving up one run on just two hits with the one game-ending K.
