BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2022) – For the third time this season the USMMA men's basketball team has won four-straight games, as the Mariners defeated Skyline North Division foe Sarah Lawrence, College, 85-46, on Tuesday night up at the Gryphons Campbell Sports Center. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 14-8 (11-4 Skyline), while SLC falls to 8-14 (6-9 Skyline) in defeat.
Freshman
Kody Robinson (Woodbridge, N.J.) led all players in the game with 17 points, thanks in large part to a game-high five 3-pointers. Sophomore
Bryce Bristow (Plano, Texas) added 14 points and senior
Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) had 13 on 6-of-9 shooting. Classmate
Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) brought down a game-best 12 rebounds and freshman
Isaac Vencel (Bloomington, Ind.) dished out six assists to lead everyone on the court.
Sarah Lawrence held a brief lead in the early stages of the first half, but the Mariners took over for good at 15:14 when Robinson's second 3-pointer in under a minute put the guests up 8-7. The game was tight for the next eight minutes before the Mariners' advantage ballooned up to 19 points, 38-19, by the end of the first half thanks to a 20-2 run.
It wasn't close in the second half, as Merchant Marine's lead hit a game-high of 40 points at 8:48 after a layup by senior
Isaiah Nix (Yorktown, Va.) made it 71-31. Nix finished with eight points, while he and Bucher both had six rebounds apiece.
The Mariners played a very disciplined game with the ball, as they only had two turnovers on the night and took advantage of 15 miscues by the Gryphons by turning them into 23 points. Merchant Marine also shot at a 44.9% clip and held SLC to just 27.9% shooting.
For the Gryphons, senior Justin Bailey scored 13 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards, while classmate Liam Barry was able to record a double-double with 12 points and a team-best 11 rebounds.
The Mariners will close out the regular season this Saturday, Feb. 19, when they celebrate Senior Day ahead of their big Skyline North Division showdown with Manhattanville. Tipoff against the Valiants is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on
