Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mariners Steam Past St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn, 61-46

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2022) – The USMMA women's basketball team clicked on all cylinders Saturday afternoon en route to a 61-46 win over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Merchant Marine won their fourth in a row to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in Skyline play. The Bears on the other hand fell to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

Game Links The word of the week for head coach Matt Dempsey was consistency, and the Mariners sure were consistent in all facets of today's victory. USMMA shot 39.7% from the field for the game and the welcomed addition to the offensive repertoire was the three ball. Led by a season-high four triples from sophomore Grace Jackson (Parma, Idaho), who tallied 16 points, Merchant Marine put together a team mark of 7-for-13 from downtown. Prior to this afternoon's contest, the Mariners had not made more than three threes in any game this season.

As it turned out, shots from outside the arc when contagious for the Mariners' offense. Freshman Hannah Ramsden (Port Aransas, Texas), set a career high with eight points by going 3-for-6 from the field and 2-for-3 from long range. Sophomore Abby Stramski (Jones, Okla.) chipped in a triple of her own.

With the outside shot working, several lanes and opportunities opened for the game's leading scorer, senior Lauren Hunter (Tinley Park, Ill.). In a game that featured two of the conference's top three rebounders in Hunter and Emma Kiley, number 45 went to work on both ends of the floor. Hunter registered her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds as she exceeded Kiley's totals of 15 point and 10 boards. Hunter's 11 rebounds made her the third player in the Skyline Conference to reach 100 total rebounds this season with 105.

Perhaps the most underrated part of today's victory was the weight lifted off the shoulders off sophomore Kaira Winston (Chesterfield, Va.). Winston contributed seven points on only three shots and had every option available on the offensive end of the floor. Winston played strong on both ends as the quarterback of the Mariners' offense directed traffic for 39 minutes which led to 14 Bears turnovers and a 15-point Mariners win.

USMMA will turn the page and seek to earn their fifth-consecutive victory on Monday night, Dec. 12, when they play their final home game of the 2022 calendar year against Lehman College. USMMA took down the Lightning, 64-37, on the road a season ago. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of both games will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
