KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2022) – In the most dramatic fashion, just eight seconds before the second overtime ended and the game would have gone to a penalty kick shootout to decide, the #3-seed USMMA men's soccer team benefitted from an own goal off a throw-in by sophomore Derek Vanasse (Camarillo, Calif.) to defeat #2-seed Farmingdale State, 1-0, in the Skyline Semifinals on Thursday night.
 
The Mariners win, combined with #5-seed Yeshiva's 2-0 victory at top-seeded Manhattanville in the other Skyline semifinal game, means that Merchant Marine will host the Skyline Championship Game this Sunday, Nov. 6, at Tomb Field.

Vanasse, who has had numerous assists off of throw-ins already this year, tossed the ball towards the box from deep on the Farmingdale sideline. The ball found freshman Wes Ferry (Newport, N.C.), who headed it on further into the middle of the box before it was directed the wrong way off the head of a Ram defender and found a wide-open right side of the net for the Mariners' game-winner.
 
Prior to that, in a game that seemed destined for PKs, it was the Mariners that held a big advantage in shots, 21-10, on the night, including an 8-4 edge in the shots on goal department. FSC senior keeper Justin Silva made seven saves, while his counterpart for USMMA, junior Ashton Carey (Pasadena, Md.) turned aside all four shots on goal that he faced for the shutout victory.
 
The Skyline Championship Game between the Mariners and Yeshiva will be played on Sunday, Nov. 6, up on Tomb Field beginning at 1 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the Skyline Finals will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
