PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 30, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team defeated Skyline rival Manhattanville College, 3-1, on Thursday night in the two teams' first meeting since the 2019 Skyline Championship Match. The 25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-12 victory improves the Mariners' record to 10-3 (4-1 Skyline), while the Valiants drop to 7-4 (1-1 Skyline) in defeat.

Four different players recorded double-doubles for USMMA, as junior
Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all players in the match with 16 kills to go along with 20 digs, senior
Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) had 14 kills and picked up 16 digs, junior
Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) tied for the match-high with 23 assists and registered 11 digs and senior
Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) dished out 22 assists with 10 digs. Senior libero
Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) recorded a match-best 25 digs and four service aces on the night.

Neither team had a particularly great hitting percentage, with Merchant Marine hitting at a .225 clip but the Mariners held Manhattanville to just .117 hitting, including hitting into a total of six Mariner blocks, with sophomore
Amy Jones (Roscoe, Ill.) leading the way with three solo stuffs.

For Manhattanville, senior Alejandra Figueroa had a team-best 12 kills, while junior Vianca Vital had a double-double with 23 assists (which tied Hyun's mark) and 13 digs. Freshman libero Grace Ballagas picked led the Valiants with 19 digs.

The Mariners will stay on the road and compete in a tri-match hosted by Rutgers-Camden this Saturday, Oct. 2. They'll take on Marywood University at 1 p.m., before facing the host Scarlet Raptors at 3 p.m. If live stats and live video links are available for the matches they'll be posted on
