KINGS POINT, N.Y. (June 9, 2020) – The Metropolitan Swimming Conference recently announced its winners of the Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award for the 2020-21 season, and representing the men's seniors throughout the multi-divisional conference, the organization chose U.S. Merchant Marine Academy senior
John Cairns (Durham, N.C.).
The Krempecki Award is given annually by the league's coaches to honor the senior that contributes the most to their institution, team, the conference and the sport of swimming & diving. This award is named in honor of long-time St. John's head coach Dick Krempecki.
"The principles of our program are Service, Respect, Responsibility, Encouragement and Pride, and service is our team's number one priority," said head coach
Sean Tedesco. "John was a recipient of the Team Service Award for both the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. He has served and volunteered to prepare vans and food for away meets, drive a van to and from practices and meets, organize the team to set up the pool for home meets and tutor the underclassmen in multiple courses, along with many other tasks he was always willing and eager to perform.
John Cairns will be remembered as one of the best leaders on our team."
The 2020-21 women's recipient of the award was Tricia Thomas of The College of New Jersey.
Cairns, a Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management major, plans to sail as a third assistant engineer upon graduation.
