Mariners Take Care Of Business Quick In Home Sweep Over Yeshiva Thursday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 21, 2021) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team won its quickest match of the season in straight sets over Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University Thursday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium, 25-6, 25-6, 25-5. The 45-minute victory was the Mariners' 11th-straight win, as they see their record move to 18-3 (10-1 Skyline) with the W, while the Maccabees fall to 0-9 (0-8 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Just three nights after registering a season-best hitting percentage, USMMA beat that once again, as the Mariners hit at a .436 clip on the night with 31 kills on 55 attempts with just seven errors. The Maccabees' hitting percentage was a season-low for a Merchant Marine opponent, -.167.
 
The Mariners also served up a season-high 25 service aces in the match.

Sophomore Brittany Breland (Bryan, Texas) put down a match-best nine kills, while senior Sierra Steffen (Encinitas, Calif.) and junior Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) both added seven kills each. Sophomore Meredith Buchanan (Kathleen, Ga.) led the Mariners with a .714 hitting percentage with five kills on seven attempts with no errors.
 
Junior Claire Hyun (Issaquah, Wash.) recorded eight of USMMA's 25 aces, while senior Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) nearly had a triple-double with a match-high 16 assists and eight digs to go along with seven service aces.
 
For Yeshiva, sophomore Hannah Aaron had three kills, while senior Maya Rosen picked up a team-best six digs.
 
The Mariners return to action next Thursday, Oct. 28, with a home, non-conference match against William Paterson University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
