Baseball Shuts Out Baruch, 10-0, In First Game In New York

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (March 21, 2017) – The USMMA baseball team returned to the field for the first time in 10 days on Tuesday and defeated non-conference Baruch College, 10-0 at MCU Park in Coney Island. The Mariners improve to 2-6 on the season with the victory, while the Bearcats fall to 3-9.
 
Merchant Marine used five pitchers over the nine innings and they combined to throw a six-hit shutout. Sophomore Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.) got the start and went two innings, giving up one hit and striking out five, earning his first victory of the season. Junior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) followed, hurling two innings of two-hit ball with one K.
 
Senior Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) pitched the fifth and sixth innings and he gave up three hits and struck out two. Freshman Ben Kane (Fountain Valley, Calif.) tossed back-to-back 1-2-3 innings with five strikeouts and sophomore John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) finished the game with a three-up, three-down bottom of the ninth.
 
Junior Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) knocked in a team-high two runs with a single in the top of the ninth. Sophomore Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) and juniors Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.) all led the Mariners with two runs scored apiece.

Up next, the Mariners will open up Skyline Conference action this Saturday, March 21, when they travel to Farmingdale State College for a doubleheader with the Rams. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 12-noon at the Farmingdale State Baseball Stadium. Live stats will be available for both games with links on the USMMA Baseball Schedule Page.
