Merchant Marine Offense Explodes in 22-2 Rout of Bryn Athyn

Box Score

Kings Point, NY – The USMMA men's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2014 season in its home opener, racking up 22 goals in victory over Bryn Athyn.  Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) racked up his 100th career point in the win, notching five goals and two assists for seven points.  Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) posted four goals while freshman Cameron Hallier (Houston, TX) had three goals on the day.

Merchant Marine (1-2) rattled off the first eight goals of the game and shutout the visitors in the first quarter.  Smith, Harty, Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY), Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA), and Ray Waters (Sayville, NY) all found the back of the cage in the opening surge.  USMMA forced the Lions into 33 total turnovers and surrendered just 14 successful clears on 29 attempts.

Bryn Athyn (0-2) broke through with a man-up goal from Luke Frazier 8:11 into the second quarter.  Merchant Marine struck for three more goals in the first half, including from Ethan Medler (Kingwood, TX) to take an 11-1 cushion into the intermission.

USMMA netted the first two goals of the second half and ended the game with nine straight to seal the 22-2 victory.  Dan McGovern (Baltimore, MD) scored twice down the stretch while Jake Scott (Houston, TX) and Brian Sayrafe (Massapequa, NY) each added one tally.

Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) was dominant taking face-offs early in the game, winning 8-of-10 and securing six ground balls.  Ben Wiese (Hudson, OH) scooped up five ground balls for the Mariners as USMMA finished the game with a 55-24 advantage in that category.

The USMMA men's lacrosse team returns to action next Sunday for a Landmark Conference clash at home against Goucher.
