William Stein has the distinction of being the Academy’s first football captain. Stein came to the Academy after earning three letters with the football team at Georgia Tech in 1941, ’42, and ’43. A fullback, Stein was a powerful runner who stood 5’9” and weighed 195 pounds. The Mariners’ football program posted a 5-3 record in its inaugural season against a rigorous schedule that included Maryland, Boston College, and Harvard. A long with his football exploits, Stein was a top player for the Mariners’ basketball and baseball squads.
