Tennis Downs Polytechnic, Falls to Goucher and Coast Guard

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
tennis team went 1-2 in its three matches at home this weekend. On Friday
afternoon, the Mariners defeated the Polytechnic Institute of New York
University, 7-2, but lost to Landmark Conference-opponent Goucher College on
Saturday, 5-4, and fell to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Sunday, 7-2. After
the weekend’s action, USMMA moved to 4-4 on the season and 0-3 in the Landmark
Conference.

– USMMA 7, NY Polytechnic 2
In No. 1 singles action, USMMA sophomore Jeff Gulitus (Cincinnati,
Ohio) beat freshman Connor Doherty (San Leandro,
Calif.), 7-5 and 6-1. In the
second singles match of the day, Kings Point senior William Coulter fell to NY Poly junior Anton Fyodorov (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) by final decisions of
6-3 and 6-3. USMMA freshman Biondi Phua
defeated sophomore Kyle Garingalao (Eatontown, N.J.),
6-2 and 6-2. In the fourth singles match of the afternoon, senior Patricia Greene beat Polytech rookie Dheeraj Erraballi (Fremont,
Calif.), 6-1 and 7-6, after
falling in the first set, 6-1. Kings Point senior Blair Voltz lost to freshman Conor
Dawson (Novato, Calif.), 6-1 and 7-5. Rounding out the
singles play, USMMA freshman Timothy
Buxton defeated rookie Vincent Siu (Columbre, Md.),
6-4 and 6-2.
Kings Point swept all three doubles matches on the day.
Gulitus and Coulter defeated the Polytech pairing of Doherty and Fyodorov, 8-2.
In No. 2 doubles play, Phua and Greene downed Garingalao and Erraballi, 8-4.
Voltz and Buxton beat Dawson and Nathan
Elysee, 8-3.
Saturday, April 10,
2010 – Goucher 5, USMMA 4
Gulitus started off the singles play for the Mariners once
again. The Cincinnati native downed Goucher
senior Michael Brooks (Old Westbury, N.Y.),
6-4 and 6-1. Coulter fell to junior Steve
Baum (Fallston, Md.),
6-2 and 6-1, while Phua defeated freshman Charlie
Leonard (Walkersville, Md.), 6-4 and 10-7, after dropping the first
set 6-3. In No. 4 singles match, Goucher junior Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md.) beat Greene, 6-0 and 6-2. Voltz
defeated Gophers freshman Daniel Csete (Miami, Fla.)
by scores of 6-1 and 6-4, after losing the second set 6-2. In the last singles
match of the day, USMMA senior Kyle
Kempinski (Milford, N.J.)
lost to junior Dave Hemelt (Parkville, Md.),
7-6 and 6-2.
Goucher took the first two doubles matches. The Gophers duo
of Brooks and Weiss downed Gulitus and Coulter, 8-6, and Leonard and Baum beat
Biondi and Greene, 8-2. However, the Mariners salvaged the last doubles match
when Voltz and Kempinski recorded an 8-4 win over Csete and freshman Brett Blackman (Philadelphia, Pa.).

– Coast Guard 7, USMMA 2
USCGA was victorious in all three doubles matches on the
afternoon. Senior Chris Pappe (Kenosha, Wis.) and
freshman Blake Maurer (Fort Worth, Texas)
beat Gulitus and Coulter, 8-4. Sophomore Matt
Faha (Stafford, Va.)
and junior Anthony Foss (Red Lion, Pa.) recorded an 8-4 victory over Phua and Greene,
while senior Cody Isaacson (Plainview,
Texas) and freshman Joe
Sullivan-Springhetti (Portland, Ore.) beat Voltz and Kempinski, 8-4.
In the No. 1 singles match, Gulitus lost to Maurer, 6-4 and
6-3, while Coulter picked up a win for USMMA by beating Isaacson, 7-6 and 6-3.
Phua lost to Foss, 6-4 and 7-5; Greene fell to Faha by scores of 6-1 and 6-4
(after winning the middle set, 6-3); and Sullivan-Springhetti downed Voltz, 6-3
and 6-4. In the final singles match of the day Buxton won by default.
Head Coach Corbin Sutton and the Mariners return to action
tomorrow when they travel to Farmingdale,
N.Y. to play SUNY Farmingdale.
The opening serve is set for 4 p.m.
