Wrestling And SAAC Participate In Hopes For Heroes 5k Run

Members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and wrestling team at the United States Merchant Marine Academy attended the Hopes for Heroes Run on Sunday, Apr. 6. It marked the inaugural 5K run/walk through Bay Park and the Village of East Rockaway. The proceeds of the event benefited severely wounded and disabled men and women of the U.S. Military. Four Mariners of the United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team began competing at the NCAA Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday. Through the first day of action, USMMA is in 39th place with four points. Sophomore Philip Greene at 133 pounds, freshman James Beshada at 141 pounds, freshman Dan Twito at 149 pounds and sophomore Eric Vincent at 197 pounds all competed for the Mariners at the championship event.Four Wrestlers Head To NCAA Championships This Weekend

Four members of the United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team – Philip Greene, James Beshada, Dan Twito and Eric Vincent - will compete at the NCAA Championships in Cedar Falls, Iowa this weekend. Greene, Beshada and Vincent all automatically qualified after winning their respective weight classes at the Centennial Conference Championships while Twito made the cut as a wild card after finishing second in his weight class. Wrestlers who finish in the top eight of their weight class this weekend will garner All-American honors. Eric Vincent of the United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team was ranked eighth in the nation at 197 pounds. The announcement was made earlier this week. Vincent most recently won his weight class at the Centennial Conference Championships. The No. 16 United States Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team won the Centennial Conference for the first time on Saturday. Head Coach Tim Alger received the Coach of the Year Award after leading his team to victory and bouncing back from an eighth place finish in 2007. Sophomore Philip Greene, freshman James Beshada and sophomore Eric Vincent won their weight classes to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Freshman Dan Twito, who placed second in his weight class, will also be heading to Nationals after capturing the wild card spot. jump to page:
