Mariner Women Finish Second At Queensborough Invite; First Among DIII Schools

BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 16, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country competed at the Queensborough Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday. The Mariners came in second place overall with 57 points, but first among the 13 Division III teams at the meet. JuCo Monroe College won the event with 31 points, while Pratt in third (164 points), Hunter in fourth (167) and SUNY Maritime in fifth (182) rounded out the top-five. 

Freshman Robin King (Raymond, Ohio) placed second in the 5K race with a time of 20:54.2. Classmate Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.) was seventh in 22:05.7, while fellow plebe Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) came in ninth after crossing in 22:21.4. 

Senior Kelsey Ramirez (Stevensville, Mich.) was the fourth USMMA runner to finish, as she produced a 19th-place showing in 22:55.9 and junior Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) came in 23rd with a time of 23:13.5. 

The final two Mariners to finish the race were juniors Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) and Valerie Bowman (Newark, Ohio), who finished back-to-back in 28th (23:39.6) and 29th (23:50.9), respectively.

Up next, the Mariners will compete in the Mount St. Mary Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29, up at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton, N.Y. First race is scheduled for 11 a.m.
