KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 29, 2018) – The Skyline Conference revealed the 2018 men's and women's cross country preseason coaches' polls earlier in the day on Wednesday. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's team was picked by the conference head coaches to finish in second place, while the women were chosen to come in sixth place.
The Mariner men were narrowly edged out by reigning Skyline Champions SUNY Maritime, as the Privateers earned 91 points (with five first-place votes), to USMMA's 89 points (with four first-place votes). St. Joseph's-L.I. came in third place in the poll with 85 points and earned the remaining two first-place votes.
The remaining schools on the men's side were Farmingdale State in fourth (69 points), Mount St. Mary in fifth (64 points), Purchase in sixth (55 points), Yeshiva in seventh (40 points), Sarah Lawrence in eighth (34 points), Mount St. Vincent in ninth (30 points), St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in 10th (26 points) and Old Westbury in 11th (22 points).

The St. Joseph's-L.I. women was picked to repeat as Skyline Champions, earning 91 points and six first-place votes to top the list. Farmingdale State (87 points, four first-place votes) was a close second, while Mount St. Mary (75 points), Sarah Lawrence (66 points) and SUNY Maritime (64 points) rounded out the top five.
The Mariners came in sixth with 57 points, but did earn one first-place vote. Purchase (55 points) came in seventh, Mount St. Vincent (48 points) was picked eighth, Old Westbury (25 points) placed ninth, Yeshiva (20 points) came in 10th and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (17 points) were picked to finish last in 11th place.

Merchant Marine opens the 2018 season this Friday, Aug. 31, when they take part in St. Joseph's-L.I.'s 4th Annual Friends and Alumni Meet. The first race is scheduled to go off at 6:15 p.m. at the Broadway Ave. Park in Sayville, N.Y.
