USMMA Takes Third at West Point

The United States Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team opened their schedule Friday afternoon at the West Point Open hosted by the United States Military Academy.

Conditions were hot, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees on the tough, hilly, 5.4 kilometer course.

Amidst stiff competition from institutions such as West Point, Ramapo College, SUNY Maritime, Monroe College, The City College of New York, The College of New Rochelle, and the United States Military Preparatory School, USMMA's women's team placed third finishing behind West Point and Ramapo College.

Sophomore captain Amber Kinter (pictured) led the way for the Mariners placing 19th overall, helping Kings Point defeat their rivals from SUNY Maritime.

Rounding out the top five were Danielle Garcia-Lance, sophomore Elizabeth Coulter, freshman Gloria Mahoney, and freshman Madeline Sullivan.

"This was the first collegiate race for a lot of our women," said Head Coach Greg Lott.  They responded very well to competition.  Even though a couple of our top runners didn't participate, the ladies had a strong performance as a team.  It's going to be fun to see how they develop throughout the year."

The Mariners will have a week to rest up before competing in the Purchase College Invitational next Saturday, September 8th
