Gilbertson Earns Honorable Mention All-America Praise From AVCA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2018) – The accolades keep piling up for U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.), as the rookie was named an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American on Tuesday.

This tremendous honor comes a week after Gilbertson was selected as the Skyline Rookie of the Year and to the First Team All-Skyline. She was also named the AVCA Northeast Region Freshman of the Year and tabbed to the All-Region Team as well.

Gilbertson becomes the first female at the Academy to receive All-America praise since track & field star and USMMA Athletics Hall of Famer Anna Maly '93 did so back in 1993 after she was an All-American after winning National Champion in the Heptathlon.

In the updated national stat rankings released this morning, the freshman continues to rank in the top-15 in the country in three statistical categories. She is fifth in the nation with 5.13 points per set, 12th with 4.25 kills per set and 14th with 0.76 service aces per set. Merchant Marine's updated national statistical rankings can be viewed at this link (team rankings on page one, individual on page two).

Gilbertson helped lead the Mariners to an 18-6 overall record this year, including a perfect 10-0 mark in Skyline Conference action, helping USMMA claim the Skyline Regular Season Championship. The Mariners also won a program-record 15-straight matches throughout the season.
