Kappas And Gilbertson Sweep Skyline Weekly Honors

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2018) – On Monday, the Skyline Conference announced its weekly honors for women's volleyball and a pair of USMMA student-athletes swept the awards, as junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) took Player of the Week honors and freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) was named Rookie of the Week. The accolades come after the pair's performances in the Mariners' 3-0 week last week with straight-set wins over Yeshiva on Thursday, and SUNY Maritime and Farmingdale State on Sunday.

This is the second time this season that Kappas has garnered Player of the Week praise, as she also earned it back on Oct. 1. Kappas averaged an incredible 11.43 assists over seven sets (80 total). She also added 12 digs on Saturday (five against the Privateers and seven against the Rams), finishing the week with 1.71 digs per set. The junior also put down four blocks against SUNY Maritime.

Gilbertson earned Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season, all in the last five weeks (Sept. 24, Oct. 1 and Oct. 15). Over the three matches, she averaged 6.43 points per set and 5.00 kills per set on a .471 hitting percentage (35k-11e-51a), and had six service aces in the victory over the Maccabees on Thursday.

  • Freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) is the conference leader (with the minimum met) with 9.26 assist per set.
