KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2018) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team defeated visiting Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary in straight sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-16) to earn its sixth-straight victory and move to 9-5 (3-0 Skyline) on the year, while the Knights fall to 9-10 (2-2 Skyline) with the loss.
Senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) had a strong night, leading all players in the match with a season-best 22 kills (her second 20-plus kill effort of the year), while hitting at a .556 clip (22k-2e-36a). Freshman Taylor Gilberton (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded yet another double-double (her fifth of the season) after putting down 11 kills and picking up 15 digs.
Junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 39 assists and narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine digs and classmate Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) had a match-high 16 digs and six service aces.
The Mariner offense also got contributions from freshman Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who had four kills, and classmates Caroline Elliott (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.), who registered three apiece. Defensively, junior Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) picked up six digs.
Mount St. Mary mustered just nine kills on the night (compared to the Mariners' 43), and hit -.094. Junior Madelyn Barberan had a team-high four kills and eight digs, while senior Kim Gries recorded seven assists.
The Mariners are right back in action tomorrow night, Thursday, Oct. 4, when they play host to non-conference opponent Medgar Evers. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
