Mariners Sweep Mount St. Vincent On The Road Thursday Night

BRONX, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team defeated Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent in straight sets on the road Thursday night in a rematch of the 2017 Skyline Championship match. With the 25-13, 25-18, 25-19 victory, the Mariners improve to 6-5 (2-0 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to 3-11 (1-1 Skyline). 

Freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded her second-straight double-double and third of the season, as she led all players in the match with 16 kills and tied for the match-high with 15 digs. The rookie hit .483 (16k-2e-29a) on the night, part of the Mariners' impressive .398 hitting clip (50k-11e-98a) as a team. Junior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 44 assists over the three sets (11.67 per set), while also leading the team with three aces. 

Senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added 11 kills, while freshman Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Caroline Elliott (Ridgewood, N.J.) chipped in with seven apiece. Vendl hit .538 and Elliot hit .462. Classmate Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) led the Mariners with a .667 hitting percentage (6k-0e-9a), while also putting down a match-high five blocks. Defensively, junior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) tied Gilbertson for the match-high with 15 digs. 

The Dolphins were led by junior Tara Maloney, who had seven kills and seven digs. Sophomore libero Alexandra Rio picked up a team-best eight digs and freshman setter Madison Gale registered 12 assists. 

After three weeks away from Kings Point, the Mariners return to the friendly confines of the Liebertz Gymnasium this Saturday, Sept. 29, when they host a non-conference tri-match against Brooklyn and Bard.
