KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2018) – Behind double-double efforts by three players, the USMMA women's volleyball team won its Skyline-opener over St. Joseph's-Long Island, 3-1, on the road Tuesday night at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Athletic Center. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 5-5 (1-0 Skyline), while SJC falls to 6-6 (0-1 Skyline).

Freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) notched her second-career double-double with career-highs of 20 kills and 16 digs. Senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) put down 14 kills and registered 12 digs, while junior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 37 assists and picked up 10 digs in her first match of the season.

Defensively, junior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) recorded her third 20-plus dig effort of the season, as she led the Mariners with 21 digs.

The Mariners dropped the first set, 25-22, but rebounded to take the second by that same exact score, 25-22, to tie the match at 1-1. USMMA jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set and forced St. Joe's to burn a timeout. The Mariners kept their foot on the pedal, though, and cruised to a 25-17 victory. Merchant Marine had another strong start in the fourth set and claimed the match win with a 25-13 triumph.

The Golden Eagles were led by freshman Amanda Goldstein, who registered 10 kills on a .500 hitting percentage (10k-2e-16a). Senior libero Danielle Senecal led all players in the match with 22 digs, while classmate Amanda Rose had 13 digs. Sophomore setter Toni Parente dished out 14 assists on the night.
