KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2017) – On Saturday, the USMMA women's volleyball team hosted a Skyline Conference tri-match with Purchase and Old Westbury on Senior Day. Prior to the first match of the day against the Purchase Panthers, the Mariners paid tribute to their six graduating seniors with a special Senior Day Ceremony. On the court, Merchant Marine earned a pair of sweeps over both "Panther" teams – taking a 25-15, 25-8, 25-12 decision over Purchase in the early match and a 25-17, 25-13, 25-18 victory over Old Westbury in the "night cap." The Mariners improve to 15-7 (8-2 Skyline) with the two wins. Old Westbury, which also beat Purchase, closes out the season with a 13-13 record (2-8 Skyline) after the split and Purchase ends the year 0-22 (0-10 Skyline) after a pair of losses.
In the first match against Purchase, the Mariners were led by senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.), who had a match-high 15 kills and tied for the match-high with eight digs. Sophomore setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 23 assists to lead all players and senior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) added five kills, 10 assists and seven digs.
Every single Mariner scored at least one point in the contest – senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) had three kills and three digs, classmate Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) contributed two kills, a match-high seven service aces and four digs, fellow senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) added seven kills, classmate Emily Gramer (Denver, Colo.) chipped in with two kills, junior Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) had two kills, Kappas also put down one kill to go along with three aces, junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) contributed six kills and four digs and newcomer Jourdin Thompson (Brighton, Colo.), playing in her first collegiate match added a service ace, an assist and three digs.
In the victory over Old Westbury, Kappas nearly had a double-double with a match-high 22 assists and nine digs, Pope led the way offensively with 10 kills and led all players with five aces and tied for the match-high with three blocks, while Lefler was right behind on kills with nine to go along with two aces and Gleason added eight kills as well as with five assists and seven digs.
Once again, every Mariner in the match contributed at least one point to the win – My. Toler had a service ace and three digs, Kappas added two kills and three aces, Carmon put down two kills and tied for the match-high with three blocks, Me. Toler added a kill and a block, Miller had two service aces, Gramer added a kill and Thompson had three aces.
The Mariners have clinched the #2 seed of the Skyline Conference Championships for the second-straight year and earn a bye through the first round into the semifinals. The semifinal matchup will be held on Thursday night, Nov. 2, at the Liebertz Gymnasium against the winner of the match between #3 St. Joseph's of Long Island vs. the #6 seed, which is yet to be determined – that first-round contest will be played at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Tuesday.
