KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2017) – The USMMA women's volleyball team defeated visiting St. Joseph's College of Long Island in straight sets on Tuesday night in Skyline Conference action at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 7-3 (2-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-9 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.
Merchant Marine jumped out to leads of 15-7 and 20-12 in the first set to force SJC to burn its two timeouts before cruising on to a 25-13 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
It was St. Joe's that got off to good starts in the second and third sets, but the Golden Eagles ultimately could not hold on to their leads. They saw a 13-10 advantage in the second set turn into a 25-21 win for the Mariners in a close decision and – in the third set – took a lead of as high as seven points, 11-4, before Merchant Marine stormed back and claimed the match victory with a 25-16 win.
Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded a double-double with 11 kills and a team-high 12 assists. Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) led all players in the match with 13 kills to go along with nine digs and a .207 hitting percentage and sophomore Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 26 assists and also picked up nine digs. Senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) contributed to the W with a match-high four service aces as well as six digs.
For the Golden Eagles, senior Claire Urizzo registered a team-best seven kills, while classmate Jessica Monteserrato had a double-double with 16 assists and a 10 digs. Junior libero Danielle Senecal picked up a match-high 15 digs.
Merchant Marine will next host Skyline Conference opponent Mount St. Vincent this coming Thursday, Sept. 28, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the match will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
