Towson, MD - The USMMA volleyball team was knocked out of the Landmark Conference Tournament Sunday afternoon by #6 Goucher, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Gophers. Amanda See (Waukesha, WI) paced the Mariner defense with nine digs while freshman Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, FL) posted a team high eight kills. However, the Gophers swung at a .278 clip in the match while holding the Mariners offense to a negative hitting percentage overall.
Goucher (10-18) claimed the first five points of the opening set and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-10 victory. The Gophers were led by 18 kills and a superb .395 hitting percentage by Megan Chalk. The home team would again jump out to an early advantage and never look back in the second set, winning 25-15 in the middle frame.
Merchant Marine (11-5) rebounded to start the third set, quickly building a 5-2 edge after a Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) kill. However, Goucher would engineer an 8-3 run to regain control of the game. Another spurt late in the set left little drama as the Gophers advanced to the Landmark Conference Tournament quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory after taking the third set, 25-17.
The USMMA volleyball team returns home Wednesday night for a 7:00 pm match against CCNY that will be preceded by Senior Night festivities.
