Kings Point, NY - The USMMA volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to rival Coast Guard Saturday afternoon inside O'Hara Hall. Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) paced the Mariners attack with five kills but USMMA committed 24 attacking errors in the loss. Kelsey DePorto had a huge match for the visitors, compiling 14 kills along with a .400 hitting percentage.
Merchant Marine (6-1) stayed with USCGA early and finished the opening set with a team high nine kills. Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) led the way with three kills in the set while Paige Queen (Falcon, CO) added six assists. However, the Bears hit at a blistering .389 clip and took the first set, 25-14.
Coast Guard (6-2) jumped out to a 9-2 cushion in the second set as USCGA made just three miscues in the frame. USMMA battled back to win four straight points and close the gap to 9-6 following a kill from Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO). However, from there the Bears engineered a 9-2 run and claimed the second set, 25-13.
The Mariners held an early 7-5 edge in the third set after a service ace from Palma and an errant Coast Guard set. However, the Bears would again pull away down the stretch and capped off 3-0 sweep of the Mariners with a 25-14 victory in the third stanza.
Merchant Marine's 6-1 record is the program's best start in 15 years. The Mariners will look to get back into the win column Wednesday night as they take on Lehman on the road.
