Merchant Marine Closes Out Season at Cougar Classic

Union, NJ - The USMMA volleyball team completed the 2012 campaign this weekend at the Cougar Classic.  The Mariners completed the tournament with a 0-4 record and dropped matches to Baptist Bible (PA), Hamilton, Bates, and Kean.

The Mariners claimed the second set of their match-up with tournament host Kean after hitting .192 in the game.  Kelly Snoden (Oak Harbor, WA) had the best Mariner performance of the weekend and recorded a double-double in the match with 11 kills and 13 digs.  However, the Cougar offense would catch fire and Kean eventually prevailed, 3-1.

Merchant Marine (12-17) opened the tournament with a 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 loss to Baptist Bible (PA).  Freshman Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) racked up 16 assists on the Mariners 20 total kills.  Freshman Caitlin McCabe (Edgewood, NM) led the team defensively with nine digs.

The Mariners finished Saturday's action with a narrow setback at the hands of Hamilton, 25-18, 25-18, 25-21.  Sophomore Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) and freshman Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) led the way for Merchant Marine with 19 and 17 digs, respectively.

USMMA was upended Sunday morning by Bates with set scores of 25-18, 25-9, and 25-15.  Huelbig added 13 assists to her team leading season total and Palma tacked on eight kills to increase her team high mark.
