Old Westbury, NY – Freshman Caitlin McCabe (Edgewood, NM) ripped a career high 13 kills along with 13 digs as Merchant Marine defeated Old Westbury in four sets Wednesday night. Michielle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) was a machine for the USMMA defense, racking up 31 digs in the victory. The Mariners moved back above the .500 mark for the season, winning by set scores of 25-15, 25-11, 20-25, 25-8.
Merchant Marine (11-10) exploded out of the gate in the first set, totaling 12 kills and swinging at a .250 clip in the opening frame. Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) also notched a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs in the match. Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO) finished the night with eight kills and 16 digs on her stat line.
Old Westbury (7-18) was held to a negative hitting percentage in the second and fourth sets as the Mariners totaled four blocks on the night. USMMA also served tough throughout the match, posting 16 service aces.
Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 34 assists, 16, digs, and three kills in the Merchant Marine victory. Old Westbury was led by the 10 kills and 19 digs of Jennifer Jean.
The Mariners will now head to the second Landmark Conference weekend of the season, hosted by Moravian. USMMA is scheduled to square off with Catholic and Scranton on Saturday followed by a Sunday meeting with Susquehanna.
