Mariners Win Streak Snapped in 3-0 Loss at NYU
New York, NY – The USMMA volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of NYU Wednesday night, putting an end to the Mariners four game winning streak. The Violets posted a .365 hitting percentage in the match and were led by nine kills from Alexandria Mao. Cassandra Palma (Loomis, CA) paced the USMMA attack with five kills while Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, CO) tallied a team high five digs.
Merchant Marine (7-4) fell into a 4-0 hole in the opening set but battled back to maintain a slim lead through the middle stages of the game. A Michelle Danhof (San Antonio, TX) kill made it 22-20, USMMA, and forced the Violets to call for a timeout. The home team would rally off the bench and claim five of the next six points to win the set, 25-23, on an Allie Williams service ace.
NYU (7-5) caught fire in the second set and turned what was a 9-9 score into a 25-11 second set victory. The Violets made a similar run in the final set after the Mariners were down just one at 10-9. NYU would go on to claim the set, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.
Riley Huelbig (Poolesville, MD) dished out 13 assists in the match for USMMA.
The Mariners return to action this Saturday at home inside O'Hara Hall for a tri-match against York (NY) and Montclair State. Match time is set for 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, respectively.
